What a Sunday in the NFL! We saw high-scoring games left and right, and that usually means plenty of betting success. To break the fourth wall for a moment, yours truly shared a lotto ticket parlay on Yardbarker on Saturday and it freaking hit. $20 to win nearly $8K. I'm on a high, so let's see if we can keep these magic juices flowing. Back to business.
As we've mentioned before on prime-time NFL games, DraftKings is offering up risk-free bets, and many other books are jumping on the trend. We'd like to continue taking advantage of these promos, knowing we'll get our bet back as a bonus if it loses. There are two spots and players that look best, one from each game. Get that second TV in the living room; we'll want our eyes on both.
The Atlanta running backs combined for 131 yards and three touchdowns last week against Carolina, and that certainly has us thinking New Orleans may opt for a similar approach against this Panthers defense.
Jamaal Williams is clearly the lead running back for the Saints, as he saw 18 carries in Week 1. That volume didn't yield results, as Williams finished with just 45 yards, but Tennessee has a solid run defense and a weak secondary, so perhaps it shouldn't be too surprising.
As long as Williams gets that volume, he should find some rushing success. In the past 12 games where Williams saw 14+ carries, he's averaging 74.8 rushing yards.
For this SGP, we're just asking for 50+ yards from Williams, something both Tyler Allgeier and Bijan Robinson pulled off in Week 1.
We'll tack on his touchdown, given his clear red zone role.
SGP Leg #1:
Amari Cooper isn't expected to play, which sets up Donovan Peoples-Jones as the deep threat in this Cleveland passing game. While Peoples-Jones didn't see many targets last week, his 15.5 average depth of target (aDOT) confirms that Deshaun Watson is going to look his way down the field.
This should come in handy against a Pittsburgh secondary that was among the worst at slowing down explosive plays last season. Brandon Aiyuk plays a similar role to DPJ, as an outside receiver who gets targeted deep. He finished with an 8-129-2 statline. We're not asking for nearly as much from Peoples-Jones here.
SGP Leg #2:
Together, these SGPs combined are +1211 on DraftKings. Opt-in to their risk-free bet, and you're looking at a no-risk $10 to win $131.15. Let's finish Week 2 strong!
NFL Week 2 sees comebacks, get-rights and plenty of 2-0 starts — What an action-packed day in the NFL! The Seahawks grabbed one of the more impressive and exciting wins of the afternoon, forcing OT late in Detroit before winning on a walk-off touchdown. In a much lower-scoring game than anticipated, Kansas City took down Jacksonville 17-9 to get their first win. Baltimore advanced to 2-0 while Cincy fell to 0-2, and now the Bengals have concerns about Joe Burrow's calf. The Bills throttled the Raiders, and the Giants clawed back from down 21 to beat the Cardinals.
The dust settled, and we have quite a few 2-0 teams with a few more potentially joining tonight:
Of the above, sportsbooks have yet to be convinced Washington and Tampa Bay are for real, with their odds to make the playoffs still set at +230 and +135 respectively. Tua Tagovailoa is the standalone MVP favorite on DK currently at +600, while San Francisco is the +650 Super Bowl favorite.
Two big QB performances in Week 3 college football shape Heisman market — We saw a few premier quarterback performances this weekend in college football, and that has shifted the odds for the 2023 Heisman winner. No. 8 Washington's Michael Penix Jr. tossed 473 yards and four touchdowns in a blowout win over Michigan State, while LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels completed a school-record 88.2% of his passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns. Penix is now the runner-up to win the Heisman at +550, and Daniels is sitting at +3000.
Orioles-Astros series this week could be ALCS preview — Two of the the American League's best square off to start the week, with a three-game series in Houston. Baltimore owns the best record in the AL at 93-56, while Houston is the favorite to advance back to the World Series at +250. The Astros won two of three this year and are -185 to win tonight.
