The Akron Zips (1-7) take on the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-7) at home on Wednesday. Akron is coming off a rough 41-14 loss to Bowling Green, while Kent St. was embarrassed 24-6 by Buffalo recently. The Zips’ lone win came at home, where they’re 1-2, so they have a slight advantage tonight, but both teams have really struggled. The Golden Flashes are on a five-game losing streak, while the Zips have dropped six straight.

The Golden Flashes are awful when it comes to moving the ball, and they come in averaging the second-fewest yards in the country. Of 133 schools, they’re 132nd in yards (259.9) and yards per play (4.1). Last week, they only totaled 144 yards, and although they elect to run a lot more often, they’re one of the worst teams at both passing and rushing.
Kent St. doesn’t have a strong defense either, as they allow the 16th-most yards per completion, indicating they are susceptible to big plays downfield. Their pass defense hasn’t been as bad in recent weeks, but it still hasn’t been enough to compensate for their inept offense.
The Zips are bad all-around, and their offense is ranked 124th in rushing yards and 110th in passing yards. Akron ranks dead last in yards per completion and fourth-worst in yards per attempt. Overall, they are 130th in total yards, so we should never expect much from this unit.
The Akron defense isn’t as bad, but they’re still below average. Their run defense is somewhat average, but versus the pass, the Zips have been less efficient despite not giving up that many passing yards.
The Golden Flashes have lost and failed to cover five games in a row, so they’re really never expected to show up. The Zips are 2-5 against the spread in their last seven, which isn’t much better. Both teams are awful, but with both defenses ranking near the bottom, expect some scoring here. Both offenses don’t usually get to go up against such bad defenses, so expect the total to soar over 38 points.
