This is a very, very dangerous game for the SEC.
Toledo is a good enough team to pull this off and throw the Kentucky season into a tailspin before it gets started.
The Wildcats should be better after a horrible 4-8 season, but with Ole Miss up next, and a run of SEC road games at South Carolina and Georgia, soon after, and Tennessee and Tennessee to follow, there's no margin for error here.
The Rockets were 2-0 against Power Four teams last season, destroying Mississippi State 41-17, and stunning Pitt in a wild GameAbove Sports Bowl.
Win this, and there's a real shot and being in the mix for the Group of Five's spot in the College Football Playoff.
Kentucky vs Toledo How To Watch
Date: Saturday, August 30, 2025
Game Time: 12:45 PM ET
TV: SEC Network
Location: Kroger Field, Lexington, KY
The offense has the passing game to keep pressing.
Quarterback Tucker Gleason returns, and the rest of the skill spots got an upgrade.
Trayvon Rudolph (Northern Illinois) makes an already good receiving corps far better, and former Kentucky running back Chip Trayanum will take over the running back chores.
The lines can hold up, the linebacking corps is far deeper with transfers, and the secondary might be the team's biggest strength. Meanwhile, Kentucky has to hope the offense starts to work after struggling to do the basics on a regular basis, but ...
The defense will be more than fine.
The problems of last year fell mostly on the offense, but the defensive line was able to hold up - even if there wasn't enough of a pass rush - and the secondary will hold its own against the Toledo receiving corps.
For all of the positives about Toledo, even with Trayanum coming in, the running game has to prove it can produce again after sputtering for fewer than 3.5 yards per carry.
And about the offense ...
The talent is there on the Kentucky offense, but will it start to work?
Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada should work out fine at quarterback, the receiving corps could be the program's best in a while if it gets and stays healthy, and the backs are there to finally get something working.
The Wildcats will get by Toledo, but they'll have their hands full until late.
