Ever wanted to own a piece of Killington history? Or just wanted your very own gondola cabin? Now you have the chance to for both- Killington is auctioning off cabins from their historic Skyeship gondola.

The cabins were first installed in 1994, and have since transported millions of skiers nearly 2.5 miles from the base of Route 4 to the top of Skye Peak. Each of the cabins features one of 45 unique and varied designs, which were created by artists and graphic designers when the cabins were initially installed.

87 of the historic cabins will be auctioned, with a portion of the proceeds going to support small, local ski areas' infrastructure needs. The auction went live on Monday, August 25th and has already raised $190,000, surpassing and nearly doubling the $100,000 fundraising goal. See below.

While Killington is excited to give folks the opportunity to own a little bit of the mountain's history, they also wanted to remind those bidding of a few realities of owning a historic gondola cabin.

For one, each cabin weighs more than 950lbs -without the hanger arm and grip, and they aren't balanced. Given their weight and size, you will need a telehandler, excavator, or forklift with a sling system to move them. You will also need a 10' x 6' trailer to transport it on as well as ratchet straps or ropes to secure it.

Killington also reminds bidders that these cabins are 32 years old (practically ancient in ski lift years). As a result, the door opening mechanisms are prone to breaking, the windows are scratched, and the metal has rusted, all of which mean they will require long-term maintenance. If those factors don't deter you, bidding for the cabins starts at $1,000

Killington is currently in the process of replacing all 116 Skyeship Gondola cabins with new ones as well as updating the gondola barn ahead of the 2025/26 winter season.
