The Sacramento Kings made the bold decision to keep their current core together this offseason and compete for a playoff spot in the loaded Western Conference next season instead of beginning a rebuild.
Of course, many around the NBA expected the Kings to start a rebuild this offseason after trading De’Aaron Fox last season, or at least move on from one of their star players in Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan or Zach LaVine.
Instead, the Kings have elected to keep their core together and upgrade their roster to chase a playoff spot next season.
Sacramento does have some key areas of need that they need to address before the start of next season with the point guard position being the main one, though their forward depth could also use an upgrade.
With this in mind, Sports Illustrated’s Eric Sperlazza recently released a mock trade that would have the Kings sending Malik Monk to the San Antonio Spurs in return for two forwards.
In the trade, the Kings would send a package of Monk, Terrance Davis and a 2027 top-15 protected first-round pick to the Spurs for Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson.
Monk has been in trade rumors all offseason after putting together the best season of his NBA career last season and it has been reported that the Kings are looking to move him.
They would do just that in this proposed deal while also adding two key forwards to their roster I Sochan and Johnson to help upgrade their wing depth.
For Sochan, he would give Sacramento another young forward off the bench who is a great defender and solid offensively, though he does need to improve his outside shooting.
Johnson would also give the Kings a solid forward off the bench who is a great scorer and rebounder who would also bring grit to a team that desperately needs it like he did in San Antonio.
While this trade could work out well for the Kings, the Spurs would likely want more in return for two of their key young players, though Monk would give them some much-needed shooting around Fox, Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
Because of this, it would likely cost the Kings a much larger package than this one to pull off this deal and they could also look elsewhere to upgrade their roster.
