Lee Corso, who played college football at Florida State University and coached at multiple schools in the sport, first joined ESPN's "College GameDay" in 1987.

At the time, the show was mostly a studio-driven highlights program, not yet the on-campus spectacle it’s now known for. Alongside others, Corso helped to transition GameDay into a traveling pregame show starting in 1993, broadcasting live from college campuses, as it still does today.

Corso quickly became known as the show's primary entertainer, creating numerous traditions that fans and co-hosts alike enjoyed for decades. Arguably Corso's most famous bit is the "headgear pick." Beginning in 1996, he would put on the mascot head of whatever team he predicted to win the featured game at the end of the broadcast.

This Saturday's "College GameDay," hosted in Columbus, Ohio, ahead of the big game between No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 1 Texas Longhorns, will be Corso's final GameDay. Corso will make his final headgear pick where the tradition began — in Columbus in 1996, when he correctly chose the Buckeyes over the Penn State Nittany Lions.

In a touching tribute on Instagram, fellow GameDay hosts Kirk Herbstreit and Rece Davis explained how impactful Corso had been for GameDay and college football as a whole.

"The greatest sports entertainer of all time is Lee Corso," said Herbstreit.

"He is the pure embodiment of the spirit and the passion and the thing that makes Saturday special," added Davis. "What role did Lee Corso have in building 'College GameDay'? He's the cornerstone, the foundation, the conscience and the soul of the entire thing."

What Corso's final GameDay Will Look Like

Corso’s final "College GameDay" will serve as both a celebration and farewell to the show’s beloved figure. ESPN has already aired a tribute special, "Not So Fast, My Friend: A Lee Corso Special," featuring stories and messages from colleagues, coaches and celebrities.

Fans can expect highlight reels of his most memorable moments, on-air tributes from Herbstreit, Davis and Desmond Howard, and surprise video messages from across the sport.
