Lakers Make Major Decision on UNC Star Guard After NBA Draft

The 2025 NBA Draft concluded Thursday night, giving many prospects a chance to begin their professional careers. For others, the path forward will come through the undrafted free agent route.

University of North Carolina guard RJ Davis was one player who, unfortunately, didn't get his name called these past couple of days.

His NBA dream isn't over, and Davis signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after the NBA draft concluded.

What this means is that Davis will be playing under a one-year, minimum salary contract that will give the Lakers the opportunity to either have him on the team as a two-way player, or eventually waive him.

Much of the reason behind Davis going undrafted likely stems from his age and size. At 23 years old, the six-foot, 180-pound shooting guard is considered undersized for his position.

However, in the five years RJ Davis played in college, he dominated the ACC conference while playing for the Tar Heels.

Davis was an ACC Player of the Year, the ACC scoring leader, a Jerry West Award winner, and was a unanimous First-Team All-American in 2024.

One of UNC's all-time greats also holds the school's record for the most career three-pointers made, is second in all-time points, and is the ACC's all-time leader for having the most games while scoring double-digit points.

It's safe to say that he has a niche for scoring the basketball, but Davis' lack of size could result in him struggling to defend in the NBA.

In 175 games played at the University of North Carolina, RJ Davis averaged 15.6 PTS, 3.8 REB, 3.2 AST, and 1.0 STL over his five-year career.

Although the NBA Draft could seem disappointing for him after going undrafted, he still has an opportunity to make it in the league.

RJ Davis will have to work on not only his defensive game, but show that he can be a reliable playmaking guard in order to find his spot in the league.
