An iconic NASCAR racetrack is for sale shortly after a well-perceived return.
According to The Charlotte Observer's Alex Zietlow, Rockingham Speedway is up for sale. The North Carolina track halted a long hiatus to host Truck Series and Xfinity Series events in April.
Dan Lovenheim, who purchased Rockingham Speedway in 2018, confirmed that he's selling the property.
"We've basically taken it in first gear as far as we can go, building it out, getting it ready for bigger and better hands," Lovenheim said. "And the time is right to pass the baton to someone who can take it farther than we can."
Last month, Rockingham held its first Truck Series race since 2013 and first Xfinity Series race since 2004. The weekend drew strong TV ratings and an overwhelmingly positive response.
Racetrack promoter Bob Sargent said "The Rock" was on NASCAR's radar for a future Cup Series race. Although a post-race disqualification cost him the Xfinity Series win, Jesse Love was eager to return.
"I really hope (to come back to The Rock)," Love said. "It's a cool atmosphere. The fans want it, and you gotta give them what they want."
Lovenheim said the successful weekend didn't compel him to put Rockingham Speedway on the market.
"It gave me a greater smile in doing so," Lovenheim said. "But whether or not this race went off like it did — gangbusters — or it was rained out, still, we've taken the facility from weeds growing out of it to the capabilities of having high-level NASCAR races. And that was our goal either way."
Lovenheim called selling The Rock "a bittersweet feeling because I have grown to love the track and the area and the people."
"I wasn't expecting there to be that much hope and love for a dilapidated racetrack when I purchased it," he said. "That was a surprise. And it grows on you. When a dozen people come every day, even when there are weeds growing out of the track, to stand in front of The Rock to take pictures … It just makes you feel like a steward of history in a certain way."
