Lions head coach Dan Campbell drops telling quote while discussing former Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker's roster status in Detroit
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker's roster spot with the Detroit Lions is in serious danger.

Hooker, who is battling veteran Kyle Allen for the Lions' backup quarterback job, played in Detroit's final preseason game on Saturday against the Houston Texans. The former Vol completed 6-of-11 passes for 70 yards and one interception. He also rushed for 25 yards on one attempt.

In four preseason games, Hooker passed for 187 yards and zero touchdowns. He also turned the ball over five times (three interceptions and two fumbles).

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear that he trusts Allen more than Hooker. And based on Campbell's comments on Saturday after the Lions' loss to the Texans, it sounds like folks in Detroit believe Hooker may need a change of scenery.

“Look, it’s always going to be how much development do you believe there is," said Campbell when asked about keeping Hooker on the roster as the third quarterback. "Because look, we are talking about Hooker right now. How much development do you believe there still is? Sometimes does the player need a change of scenery? What about our own depth in other areas? I mentioned this the other day, relative to that -- alright, maybe there is room to grow. Is that worth it for the depth we need at O-Line, D-Line, receiver, DB?

"And so those are all things you have to weigh. Look, I wish Hooker, and I know he does, would’ve had a better outing, but also you have to take it with a grain of salt. It’s not like he was playing with our first O-Line out there, or first team skill position, all of that. So you take that all into account as well. I thought he was prepared. I thought he was ready, h looked pretty calm, just circumstances didn’t work out today, that’s all.”

Campbell left the door just barely cracked open for Hooker to make the Lions' 53-man roster. But at this point, it would be a surprise if the Lions actually keep Hooker on the roster -- that comment from Campbell about a change of scenery seems quite telling.

The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy left Hooker off his 53-man roster projection following Detroit’s loss to Houston.

"If we’re being honest, Hooker has not earned a spot on this roster," wrote Pouncy, who also pointed out that Hooker didn't lead a touchdown drive during the preseason. "If he makes it, it’ll be because the Lions are still invested in his development and worried he’ll be claimed by another team. But he did nothing in the preseason games to justify a spot."

Several teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, will be in the market for quarterback depth over the next couple of weeks. If Hooker is waived by the Lions, he should be able to quickly find another opportunity.
