Lions’ flanker Ruhan Straeuli has sadly announced his retirement from professional rugby at the young age of 26.

“Unfortunately, the playing chapter of my rugby career has ended sooner than expected. I would like to thank everyone who’s been supportive; it’s been a privilege to be able to give my all for this city,” Straeuli said in a club statement.

A neck injury sustained earlier in the year, which required surgery in March, proved to be career-ending for the talented loose forward.

His position on the field is as a flanker, where he exhibits his physicality. Straeuli, who joined the Lions in 2020 and made 47 appearances for the team, expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his playing time for Johannesburg.

Having earned his place in the Lions squad for the Pro Rainbow Cup SA , Straeuli, after his superb display, was named in the 2021 Currie Cup Premier squad.

Prior to joining the Lions, he showcased his skills at Stellenbosch and in schoolboy rugby, also representing the Bulls under-18 Academy.

The son of World Cup winner Rudolf Straeuli's ability was evident with his crucial tackles, winning turnovers, and providing both defensive and attacking support, which has earned him praise from coaches and teammates.

His talent was an asset to the team, and his dedication to the game was special to both the Lions and Golden Lions.

The professionalism he displayed earned the respect of his peers and supporters. His contribution both on and off the field so far in his rugby journey will surely be missed; his contribution to the team and his determination will be upheld.
