KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Penn State wrestling is competing at the NCAA Championships at the T-Mobile Center. Day 1 is Thursday, and all 10 wrestlers battle to get a spot in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Nittany Sports Now will provide coverage throughout the weekend, and I, Dominic Campbell, will do so live from the arena. I’m traveling Thursday morning to make it in time for the opening matches and will cover Penn State wrestling throughout the weekend. This includes a post with live updates for each day, interviews with wrestlers and head coach Cael Sanderson, as well as posts on big moments throughout the weekend.
Here’s a breakdown of each Penn State wrestler and who they’ll have to face first.
125 Pounds: No. 1 Braeden Davis
19-2 Overall Record
Davis will take on the winner of a first-round matchup between Brown sophomore Mike Joyce (No. 32) and Michigan State senior Tristan Lujan (No. 33). That match will occur in the Round of 32.
133 Pounds: No. 10 Aaron Nagao
14-5 Overall Record
Nagao faces off against Virginia junior Marlon Yarbrough II (No. 23) in the Round of 32. Yarbrough finished third at the ACC Championships.
141 Pounds: No. 2 Beau Bartlett
19-1 Overall Record
Bartlett takes on Maryland sophomore Kal Miller (No. 31) in the Round of 32. Bartlett defeated Miller this season in an 11-1 major decision and 5-2 last season.
149 Pounds: No. 7 Tyler Kasak
15-3 Overall Record
Kasak takes on Stanford redshirt senior Jaden Abas (No. 26) in the Round of 32.
157 Pounds: No. 1 Levi Haines
18-0 Overall Record
Haines takes on the winner of a first-round matchup between Ohio State senior Isaac Wilcox (No. 32) and Buffalo redshirt first-year Nick Stampoulous (No.33), in the Round of 32. Haines won an 11-3 major decision against Wilcox Feb. 2.
165 Pounds: No. 2 Mitchell Mesenbrink
21-0 Overall Record
Mesenbrink faces off against Northwestern redshirt junior Maxx Mayfield (No. 31) in the Round of 32.
174 Pounds: No. 9 Carter Starocci
12-2 Overall Record
Starocci looks to defend his title at 174 pounds with a matchup against Minnesota senior Andrew Sparks (No. 24) in the Round of 32. Starocci injury defaulted against Sparks at the Big Ten Championships.
184 Pounds: No. 6 Bernie Truax
14-4 Overall Record
Truax battles Clarion redshirt senior Cameron Pine (No. 27) in the Round of 32.
197 Pounds: No. 1 Aaron Brooks
17-0 Overall Record
Brooks will face the winner of the first-round matchup between Franklin and Marshall senior John Crawford (No. 32) and Northwestern redshirt sophomore Evan Bates (No. 33) in the Round of 32.
285 Pounds: No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet
15-0 Overall Record
Kerkvliet takes on the winner of a first-round matchup between Indiana graduate student Nick Willham (No. 32) and Ohio redshirt junior Jordan Greer (No. 33) in the Round of 32.
