It’s official. We’re in the dog days of summer. There is still two months before the NHL regular season begins. The MLB trade deadline has just passed, and the season is in the homestretch. With the Toronto Blue Jays currently sitting first in the American League East, we take a look at some player comparables between the Flames and the Blue Jays.

Dustin Wolf – Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

This one is easy. The two faces of the franchise currently are Dustin Wolf and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Wolf just dragged the Flames close to the playoffs. Guerrero Jr. just earned himself a $500M contract not long ago. Vladdy has 16 home runs so far this season, tied with Addison Barger for second on the team. He also has 58 RBIs, which is second on the Jays. Wolf just posted a .910 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average with three shutouts.

The two of them are going to be major reasons for the success of their respective teams shortly.

Matt Coronato – Bo Bichette

Bo Bichette is another extremely skilled young player on the Jays who came up the ranks with Vladdy before making his MLB debut. Matt Coronato continued to improve on his game before playing his first full season in the NHL this year. Coronato has such a bright future with the Flames after impressing everyone this past season. He scored over 20 goals and had 47 points through 77 games as a rookie.

Bichette, who has now been in the MLB for a few years, is one of the most productive players on the Blue Jays. He has a batting average of .297 (best on Toronto), 13 home runs (4th on Toronto), and 68 RBI’s (best on Toronto). Coronato just signed a massive contract extension, and Bo Bichette is also due for a pay raise after this season.

MacKenzie Weegar – José Berríos

When it comes to defencemen, they are most like pitchers in terms of comparisons. Both are integral and are the main parts of the defence. Berríos is arguably the Jays’ best pitcher, and out of all eligible pitchers, he has the best ERA and through 131.1 innings pitched. There is also the argument for Berríos as one of the most cost-efficient pitchers in the MLB.

MacKenzie Weegar is the best defencemen on the Flames and also one of the most cost-efficient defencemen in the NHL. His two-way game is exceptional. He was tied for third on the Flames in points, all while also having the highest plus-minus on the team. The two of them are pivotal in keeping their team from being blown out in each game or being stuck in a slug-fest.
