LSU Tigers have shockingly clear path to College Football Playoff similar to 2007 National Championship season

This hasn't been a great season for the LSU Tigers.

They started off the 2024 season with a tough 27-20 loss to the USC Trojans on a neutral field in Las Vegas before going on a six-game winning streak, including a 29-26 overtime win over Ole Miss.

Unfortunately, the Tigers have lost their two games in large fashion to Texas A&M 38-23 and Alabama at home 42-13. If you ask anyone who has followed Brian Kelly's career as a head coach, this isn't a surprise. He's struggled throughout his career in big games.

LSU has clear path to the College Football Playoff

Despite all of that, the Tigers have a very clear path to making the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. It's pretty simple: every SEC favorite needs to win and Arkansas needs to beat Missouri, who have been struggling since Brady Cook's injury.

In the above tweet, Peter Burns used this site with the tiebreakers built into the engine. It would require a six-way tie for second place which would then give the nod to the Tigers.

This is a lot of things that need to happen over the next few weeks but that's already worked in LSU's favor before back in 2007 when they lost the final week of the regular season 50-48 against Arkansas dropping to fifth in the AP poll but then defeated Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game paired with multiple other results that launched them to win the National Championship.

How likely is this to happen? Well, the only matchup where the presumed favorite would need to lose is a close matchup between Arkansas and Missouri, which is certainly possible, as the Razorbacks have beaten Tennessee this season.

If the Tigers make the SEC Championship Game, they will have to win it to make the playoff, as they can't lose a fourth game and make it as an at-large team. Being a conference champion is the only path for the Tigers, and it will likely make them a top four seed and give them a bye in the 12-team tournament.

Is it likely? No, but it's definitely not impossible.
