Last week an arrest was made in the fatal shooting of Parker High School assistant football coach Demetrice Darrell Beverly. Despite being charged with murder, the suspect has been released from jail on bond.

According to ABC 33/40 News, 23-year-old De'Corlion Keshaun Robinson of Alabama has been released on bond after posting $165,000 bail and meeting other criteria set by the District Attorney's office, the victim's family and the presiding judge.

Per the report, the terms of Robinson's release from prison were as follows:

  • Post a bond in the amount of $150,000;
  • Appear to answer and submit to the orders and process of this Court;
  • Refrain from committing any criminal offense(s);
  • Not depart the State without the leave of this Court;
  • Promptly notify the Court of any change of address;
  • No contact or communication in any form with the alleged Victim's family, namely Tara Hall and Antonio Cook; and
  • Not to possess any firearm(s).

The fatal shooting

Last Wednesday, police responded to a call from an apartment complex in Birmingham, Alabama. A 9-1-1 call had reported a shooting and when officers arrived at the scene, they found the 39-year-old coach unresponsive. Beverly was pronounced dead at 9:26 p.m.

According to reports, Beverly's father explained that he was at the apartment complex visiting a female friend when he was shot by Robinson - the woman's boyfriend.

The defense

Robinson's attorney Emory Anthony has argued that the charge should have been manslaughter rather than murder due to the "heat of passion" involved in the killing. In a statement, Anthony expressed gratitude to the district attorney's office for agreeing to bond in spite of the charges.

“When you look at it, at best, is should have been manslaughter instead of murder, heat of passion under the facts of the case that will eventually come out,” Anthony said, via AL.com.

“I think the district attorney’s office is being reasonable (for agreeing to bond) and I thank them for that. He’s never been in trouble and he’s working.”

The victim

Beverly played football and baseball at Parker High School and had been employed at his alma mater as a part-time assistant coach since 2020. He also worked in the pediatric psychiatric unit at Children’s of Alabama.

His family expressed a desire for continued privacy in the matter:

“The Beverly family kindly asks for privacy during this difficult time as they grieve, heal, and process their loss. They deeply appreciate your thoughts and prayers and respectfully request that space be given through this period of mourning.”

We will keep monitoring the case for any new developments.
