Manchester United outcast Rasmus Hojlund has been closing in on a move to Napoli

Scoring goals was a massive problem for Manchester United last season, and netting just 44 times in 38 Premier League games could not have made it clearer for the INEOS to address heading into the summer transfer window.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS have spent the summer bolstering the forward options, adding all of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to Ruben Amorim’s options in deals worth over £200m combined. After upgrading the strike force, the Portuguese has made it clear to Rasmus Hojlund that he no more has a future at the club.

Rasmus Hojlund moved to Old Trafford in a deal worth £72m from Atalanta in the summer of 2023, but struggled badly in his second campaign. The Denmark international managed just four goals in 32 Premier League in the previous season, as Manchester United finished 15th in the table and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 22-year-old has been absent from the Man United squad for their opening two Premier League matches of the season amid speculation linking him with a move to Napoli. With Sesko’s big-money arrival from RB Leipzig, Rasmus Hojlund is no longer in Amorim’s plans moving forward.

Man United striker reaches total agreement with Napoli

Napoli want to sign Hojlund on a season-long loan, which will include a conditional obligation to go along with the loan fee. The talks make it clear that Man United have opened the door for the young striker’s departure.

The Serie A side’s manager, Antonio Conte, wants someone to replace Romelu Lukaku, who is facing four months out with a thigh problem. And he has identified the out-of-favour Man United striker to potentially replace Lukaku in his squad.

Now, according to Italian journalist Ciro Venerato, speaking via Napoli Magazine, Napoli and United have reached a total agreement over Hojlund. The deal is structured as a €5m loan fee for the 2025/26 season, with a conditional obligation to buy set at €40m, triggered if certain conditions are fulfilled. These targets include goals scored, appearances and the Italian champions securing Champions League qualification.

Hojlund has supposedly agreed personal terms with Napoli, who are now pushing to complete his medical before Thursday. From United’s perspective, this deal represents a potential €45m return from a player who has struggled to blossom as a first-choice striker across two seasons.

As for the fans, it’s fair to say that this deal is an opportunity to recoup some of the money the club spent on the player two summers ago, but deep down, we would have been happy if the Dane succeeded at Old Trafford as he truly loves our club.
