The one thing that college basketball fans have learned about the NCAA transfer portal is to never think they have seen it all.
Whether it's players transferring to the same school they had already left, players immediately finding a home upon entering the portal or players landing at an unexpected program there are endless possibilities. However, a recent report by HBCU Gameday may have shed light on one of the more bizarre portal stories yet.
The New Orleans Privateers, who recently hired rapper and entertainer Percy "Master P" Miller as the program's president of basketball operations, landed a sought-after portal target by the name of Jamal Gibson. The former Southern University at New Orleans (NAIA) standout has a unique story for a multitude of reasons.
For starters, he is 27-years-old and before his two years at SUNO, he had reportedly never played organized basketball. According to Whistle Sports, he was discovered after he happened to be playing in an open run against the program's coach.
In his two seasons with the program he quickly rose to stardom, and was even named the HBCU Athletic Conference's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year both seasons.
He has been a dominant force at the NAIA level, averaging 23.2 points and 16.4 rebounds per game. Gibson will look to be a key figure in Miller's rebuild of a New Orleans program that went 4-27 this past year.
"As president of basketball operations, I am committed to bringing back that winning tradition to NOLA's team," Miller said during his introductory press conference. But this is bigger than the game, it's about educating and creating future leaders at the same time. I'm here to make sure that these young student-athletes have the opportunities, resources and mentorship to succeed on and off the court."
As for Gibson, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
