Matt Turner Reveals Pochettino's Stance On His USMNT Future After Losing Starting Spot

Former USMNT starting goalkeeper Matt Turner shared why he believes manager Mauricio Pochettino handed the position to Matt Freese. Now back in MLS after three seasons playing overseas, Turner is determined to reclaim his spot.

After spells with Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace in the Premier League, Turner returned to his former club, the New England Revolution, where he immediately became the starter. Playing overseas gave him valuable experience, but Turner never fully cemented himself as a first-choice goalkeeper—though he did deliver some strong performances for both the Gunners and Forest.

In an interview with FIFA, the USMNT’s starting goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup explained why Pochettino leaned toward Freese from New York City, especially when considering Turner’s recent performances with the national team.

"I've had some good times since he's been in and some not-so good times, and he's always stood by me and showed me his confidence. He believes and trusts in me, and that has allowed me to feel like I have the freedom to make decisions that are best for me and my family, while also putting me in a better playing situation so that I can showcase to him the best of what I have to offer on the pitch and off the pitch." - Turner said.

Turner was officially announced by the New England Revolution at the beginning of August, but he still has to fight for the position with current starter Aljaž Ivačič.

Will Turner Be Back As Starter for The USMNT?

Mauricio Pochettino has stated multiple times that Matt Turner is a reliable player and a leader in the dressing room—qualities the USMNT will need as they head into the 2026 World Cup on home soil. Traditionally, host nations haven’t found much success, but the U.S. hopes to break that trend.

At the moment, Freese and Turner stand out as the best American goalkeepers available. Even though most of the starting eleven plays in Europe, the keepers have the ability to deliver big performances. The decision ultimately lies with Pochettino, who has two top-tier MLS players to either start or be ready to step in if needed.
