It was unquestionably a special night for Matthew Golden . At 21 years old, the wide receiver out of Texas had never seen the Green Bay Packers take a first-round pass-catcher in the first round of an NFL Draft. That's correct. When the Packers selected Javon Walker in 2002, Golden wasn't born.
It had to happen in Green Bay, twenty-three years later. And Golden, a 5-11 receiver, is their option.
"It was all a part of a plan," Golden said right after being selected with the 23rd overall pick. "God made me wait this long and it was for a reason."
It was in fact a long night for the player, being only the fourth receiver off the board. Travis Hunter to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tetairoa McMillan to the Carolina Panthers, and Emeka Egbuka to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went ahead of him.
For The Athletic's Dane Brugler, though, Golden was actually the second best receiver of the class—he listed Hunter as a cornerback, and Golden below McMillan and ahead of Egbuka.
On the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board , Matthew Golden was the 19th overall prospect, which indicates a slight steal for the Packers with the 23rd overall pick.
Now, the Packers have another young receiver in a crowded room. Christian Watson is injured and entering the final year of his deal, and Romeo Doubs is also on a contract year as well. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks were the only two receivers under contract beyond 2025. Now, Golden is a big part of the mix too.
It had to be in Green Bay. It had to finally be a wide receiver. The first-round of the draft was a true dream moment for Packers fans, and Matthew Golden felt that it was the perfect ending for a process that will change his life forever.
