KTM have not made the decision to promote Vinales to their main team, even though they need a replacement for Brad Binder next year.
KTM’s original plan was for him to be promoted, and this was before he started poorly. At the moment, he’s one of just three full-time riders yet to score a point this season.
While Alex Marquez is set to replace Pedro Acosta at KTM, Vinales was expected to fill Binder’s spot.
According to Motorsport.com, Vinales isn’t being considered as a main option for next season.
Motorpasion Moto are reporting that while Vinales and KTM had come close to an agreement, nothing was ever made official. Now, it’s believed the talks have been ‘suspended’.
There is still a path forward if Vinales can start showing form and challenge Acosta, who remains the standout performer within the brand. But until then, nothing is set in stone.
Recovering from a shoulder injury picked up last July, Vinales has openly admitted he rushed his return to action. It’s still not clear when he’ll be fully fit again, which adds another layer of difficulty for him to show what he’s truly capable of.
With nearly 200 races under his belt and 10 wins in the premier class, Vinales thought he was set for a return to factory machinery next season. But now there’s concern that by the time he’s ready, it could be too late, with most seats already filled.
Ducati and Aprilia are said to have their line-ups finalised, waiting on formal announcements, leaving few open spots elsewhere. Over at Tech3 GasGas/Steiner Racing Team, Daniel Holgado is being rumoured as a possible replacement for Pedro Acosta next year.
Meanwhile, Vinales’ relationship with Jorge Lorenzo, who was recently named his rider coach, is reportedly under significant pressure. There are even suggestions that their partnership could be nearing an early end.
Lorenzo was reportedly frustrated after being left behind following the Thailand Grand Prix. The conflict in the Middle East had disrupted travel plans for several MotoGP teams.
The five-time world champion made it back home a few days late and did not make the trip to round two in Brazil. He’s also expected to miss the upcoming race in Austin.
Lorenzo is still expected to attend the Spanish Grand Prix after this short break in the season. However, he may only be there as a television pundit rather than as part of Vinales’ support team.
