The No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft will be bringing it for the Dallas Mavericks right off the bat. At least, Cooper Flagg will be at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas early next month.
Per Marc Stein of The Stein Line, Flagg is expected to play in the Mavericks’ first two summer games — July 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers, then again July 12 against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, of course, feature No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd confirmed the news on Flagg.
“I want to put him at point guard,” Kidd said, via Stein. “… I’m excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens.”
NBA Summer League in Las Vegas features all 30 teams and is scheduled for July 10-20 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Pavilion on the UNLV campus. All 76 games will air on the ESPN platforms or NBA TV.
Flagg comes to the Mavericks with some sky-high expectations after a standout season at Duke, leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four. He actually should be a college freshman this season, so it’s almost as if he’s entering the NBA right out of high school.
Dallas intends to throw him into the mix immediately, surrounding him with experienced players such as Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving (when healthy) and Klay Thompson.
