Mereceds Mone having to face three challengers at the same time at Forbidden Door made it seem almost nailed on that, finally, after 455 days, The CEO would be losing the TBS Title. In a somewhat shocking turn of events, that's not what happened. Mone will return to the US with her TBS Title reign intact, begging the question - who's even left to challenge her for the TBS Title at this stage?
Despite having been TBS Champion for well over a year, tonight's Forbidden Door was the first time Mone has ever had to defend the title against multiple wrestlers at the same time. The four-way match was the best example of the Forbidden Door name on the card, too, with CMLL's Persephone and the intimidating Bozilla from Stardom vying for the championship.
They were joined by AEW newbie, but quickly ascending star, Alex Windsor. Wrestlers from three different promotions, and still none of them could end Mone's reign. That's despite the three of them collectively deciding to try and eliminate Mone from proceedings as soon as the bell rang. Mone would return, of course, and eventually win, reversing Persephone's crucifix powerbomb for a rollup pin to win.
When you need a champion to lose their title but you don't want them to lose too much stock in the process, a multi-person match is usually the way to go. That's why many fans, myself included, assumed Forbidden Door would be the event where we finally got a new TBS Champion. Especially with Windsor looking like a popular pick with AEW higher-ups and the dominant Bozilla among Mone's challengers.
Now that Mone is beating multiple people at a time, she's running out of potential challengers even faster. The list of top female stars Mone has already beaten in her still relatively young AEW career at this stage includes just about everyone of note. Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter, Julia Hart, Athena. Name someone in AEW worthy of being the TBS Champion, and Mone has probably already beaten them.
Mone isn't undefeated, though, and therein might be the solution to this problem. Mone tried to become a double champion at All In, facing Toni Storm for the AEW Women's Title. Mone failed, but her title wasn't on the line. Perhaps there's a rematch against Storm on the horizon where both titles are on the line and the winner takes all.
Mone is also inching closer to the TBS Title's record reign set by its inaugural champion, Jade Cargill. Cargill was the TBS Champion for 508 days. Mone will break that record if she keeps hold of the title until October 16. If she ends up losing the title two days later at WrestleDream, I think it's safe to assume that's what AEW was planning all along.
