Miami Legend Named One of College Football’s Most Dynamic Players

Hurricane Hester, also known as Devin, was a CAT 5 storm of football skill who wreaked havoc on gridirons ever since his days as a prep superstar in the recruiting hotbed of Florida.

According to Brad Crawford of cbssports.com, Hester is ranked as one of the 25 most dynamic players in college football in the last 25 years.

During his career with the Hurricanes (2003-2005), Hester was a South Florida version of Jim Thorpe, excelling on offense, defense and special teams.

As a freshman in 2003, Hester returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a score against arch-rival Florida. The next season, Hester earned first-team Walter Camp All-American honors as a sophomore.

Hester’s career stat line at Miami looked like this:

  • Six return touchdowns
  • One rushing TD
  • One TD as a receiver
  • 5 INTs as a defensive back

Hester was drafted by the Bears in 2006. As a rookie, Hester scored six times on returns in 13 games.

In a career that spanned four professional teams over 11 seasons, Hester set the following NFL records:

  • 20 career returns for touchdowns
  • 14 punt returns for touchdowns

In addition, Hester accounted for 11,029 yards as a return specialist. In 2024, this production sent him into the Hall of Fame in Canton as the first return specialist to earn a gold jacket.

Imagine if Hester played for the Hurricanes in the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) era. He could have named his price and teams would have backed up a Brinks truck to pay him.

Hester should get a piece of the $2 billion pie set aside by the House Settlement for players to receive back pay from their playing days before 2021, when NIL changed the game of college football forever.
