This fall, Wolverine fans may witness a once-in-a-lifetime feat by the Michigan football program: reaching 1,000 wins. Right now, Michigan football sits a mere 11 wins out of becoming the first college football program to win 1,000 games throughout program history.

Michigan football leads nation in all-time wins

Currently, Michigan football leads the nation in all-time wins with 989 victories since the program’s creation in 1879. Over that time period, the Wolverines have claimed 11 National Championships (most recently in 1997), 44 Big Ten Championships (most recently in 2022), and more wins than any other team in the country.

Michigan’s 989 wins are 36 more than the 2nd place team, which happens to be a tie between Alabama and Ohio State (953). In fourth place is Notre Dame, which currently boasts 938.

Michigan football could break the 1,000 mark in 2023

As Michigan football has won 11 or more regular season games in the past two seasons, the Wolverines could be gearing up to break the record this fall. Michigan’s 11th game is at Maryland, and its 12th game is at home against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Since the Wolverines are slated to face Penn State at Happy Valley — a game that feels 50/50 at the moment — we could see Michigan take on Ohio State in ‘The Game’ with its 1,000th win on the line. What a game that could be on Senior Day this November.

Here is Michigan’s 2023 slate:

  • 9/2, East Carolina
  • 9/9, UNLV
  • 9/16, Bowling Green
  • 9/23, Rutgers
  • 9/30, at Nebraska
  • 10/7, at Minnesota
  • 10/14, at Indiana
  • 10/21, at Michigan State
  • 11/4, Purdue
  • 11/11, at Penn State
  • 11/18, at Maryland
  • 11/25, Ohio State

Even though Michigan football heads into 2023 with Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff-level expectations, no one knows how the upcoming season will go. If the Wolverines somehow slip to 10-2 on the season, Michigan will then have a shot at win No. 1,000 in its bowl game — which will likely be a New Year’s Six, such as the Rose Bowl.
