Michigan State Football’s Search for Second Class of 2026 Wide Receiver Narrows Down to Two

Three-star Zachary Washington announced his commitment to Michigan State on June 16. The Spartans finally got a wide receiver in their now 18-player class, but that's not enough for head coach Jonathan Smith.

Smith had three targets on his board, but as of a recent announcement, he's down to two.

Wide receivers Samson Gash, Tyren Wortham, and Rai'Shawn Elmore were Michigan State' targets heading into the weekend. However, Elmore decided to take his talents to East Carolina University.

He made his announcement on Saturday, June 21, reposting 247Sports' commitment post for the rising senior on X.

The three-star wide receiver from North Carolina is the No. 197 overall recruit and No. 42 out of his state. He received eight offers and took visits to Charlotte, MSU, and ECU in June. After his visit to Greenville on June 19, Elmore announced that he'd be joining the Pirates.

Though the month has been kind to the Michigan State Spartans, they're still looking to fill some holes in their class of 2026 roster. Washington is the only wide receiver as of now and Smith is also missing a running back in the group.

Gash and Wortham are the last two wide receiver targets left on Smith's list in the position, so landing one of them is a top priority.

In order to get Wortham, the Spartans have to flip him from UCF where he's already committed. However, he did not forgo any of his official visits in June, including Michigan State. So there's a possibility there. As for Gash, it's down to MSU and Alabama.

Alabama recently extended an offer to Gash, and he said via X that it came after a "GREAT workout and conversation." He initially was prepared to come to a decision in the very near future, but with Alabama taking over West Virginia in his final top two, his announcement could be prolonged.
