Michigan State Spartans Make Massive Decision about Coaching Staff to End Season
Abigail Dollins / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Michigan State Spartans are ready to turn over a new leaf with their program as athletic director Alan Haller has reportedly relieved the entire program’s coaching staff, according to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.

This move continues the belief that the Michigan State Spartans are getting ready to announce Oregon State Beavers’ coach Jonathan Smith as their next coach heading into the 2024 season. Smith would become the third coach since 1947 who has zero ties to the Michigan State Spartans to coach the program.

This indicates that Smith is going to bring in his own staff and completely revitalize what the Michigan State Spartans program looks like. The team ended the season 4-8 (2-7 in Big Ten) and did not do too well overall. They were 96th in passing yards per game (200.0) and 128th in rushing yards per game (88.5). On the defensive side, their 28.3 points per game allowed ranked 92nd in college football.

In a Big Ten Conference that is getting ready to welcome the USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies among their behemoths, Michigan State is ready to turn the tides and begin a new era of the program.

What should we expect out of Jonathan Smith for the Michigan State Spartans?

Jonathan Smith has proven to have the ability to turn things around as he took over an Oregon State Beavers team that did not have much going for it in 2018. The Spartans have a lot more resources readily available and seem to be distancing themselves as far away from the Mel Tucker situation as possible with this hire.

Eliminating the coaching staff as a whole is a bit extreme but maybe that was a demand by Jonathan Smith so he can have complete control of what is going on. The first season could be a huge work in progress but this hire is definitely a step in the right direction. It will be interesting to see what the contract for Smith looks like and how much time the athletic director is going to give him to turn things around.

Smith is going to lead the Michigan State Spartans to relevancy very quickly. Do not be surprised to see the Spartans in a bowl game next season under new leadership.
