There may not have been a more fascinating figure in all of college football than Mike Leach. You truly never knew what the man was going to say at any given moment, and I had always wondered what was going on in that brain of his.
While the legend may be gone, this week we got a glimpse of just how outside the box Mike Leach’s way of thinking truly was. Earlier this week, a report came out from the website College Sports Only, which shared a Reddit post that was something that could only have come from the mind of someone like Mike Leach.
According to the post, Leach once suggested throwing a little person over the line of scrimmage in short-yardage situations and was talked out of it by an assistant coach. If you gave me one guess to figure out who came up with that idea, Mike Leach would be the only logical answer that comes to mind.
Could you imagine if this actually happened in a game? I would lose my freaking mind. It would have been something we had never seen before because who else but Leach could even come up with something like this? I would have loved to be in the meeting room when Leach brought this up and said it with a straight face. I would have laughed my ass off.
Perhaps the crazy thing about this is that it could have worked. I mean, if the guy can hold onto the football, why couldn’t it have worked? As long as the person throwing him can get him over the line of scrimmage and above everyone’s heads, he shouldn’t have an issue crossing the goal line.
Whether it’s the stupidest idea you have ever heard of or the best, unfortunately, we will never know if this was true or not, since Mike Leach is no longer with us. He was a man who changed the game of football thanks to his air raid offense and his way of thinking.
While this crazy idea has not been confirmed, I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if this were true. Mike Leach was one of a kind, and I wish he were still here. You may be gone, Mike, but you will never be forgotten.
