Milwaukee Bucks summer league starts in one week, and invites are rolling in to populate the roster. Draft pick Bogolijub Markovic will be there, alongside undrafted free agent signing Mark Sears. Marquette’s David Joplin and Wisconsin’s Steven Crowl have both secured invitations. The newest face comes from out-of-state, in the form of Michigan State Spartans senior Frankie Fidler.
Last season for the Spartans, Fidler came off the bench after transferring from Omaha. Moving from the Summit Conference to the Big Ten proved a difficult transition as Fidler’s scoring fell to seven points per game. While he remained very efficient at the free-throw line he struggled elsewhere, shooting 39% from the field and half that from beyond the arc.
It’s only natural, of course, that his volume numbers dropped. Against tougher, more athletic competition, he averaged 16 minutes at Michigan State after playing 36 per night as an Omaha junior. For the Mavericks in 2023-24, he provided 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on decent shooting splits.
Listed at 6-foot-7 and 217 pounds, he has the frame and length of an NBA guard-forward. Of course, the Bucks likely don’t expect much pro potential from Fidler, who went undrafted and was not a name on anyone’s big board. Summer league is the place for experimentation and chance-granting. For Fidler, it’s an opportunity to share the court with future NBA players, as well as guys like Tyler Smith who have already touched the floor for Milwaukee. Who knows, maybe he flashes promise.
The Bucks have four summer-league games on schedule: July 10 versus Denver, July 12 vs Cleveland, July 13 vs the Clippers, and July 16 against the Bulls. Obviously that isn’t much – only 192 minutes of basketball – so Fidler and the rest will scramble to make the most of their limited showcase.
Following summer-league play, training camp is the next step for those given further invitations. Even for someone like Sears, an Alabama standout and popular signing among fans, making the Bucks roster is hardly guaranteed.
For players who don’t, Milwaukee’s G League affiliate the Wisconsin Herd is a potential landing spot. If Fidler impresses team coaches and scouts, he could find himself there to begin the season.
