It has been a summer to forget for Tottenham fans after the club made a mess of itself in the transfer window. One can only feel sorry for Thomas Frank as he has walked right into the mess at N17 and not been backed by Daniel Levy in the transfer window. And it may not be wrong to suggest that the Danish tactician is already being set up to fail by Levy at Hotspur Way.
The North London club have been in the market for a new #10 for almost two months now. And still Daniel Levy has not yet managed to bring in one due to the sheer incompetency on display. The Spurs chairman has also faced a public dressing down after getting snubbed by Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze at the eleventh-hour, with the player preferring to join Arsenal instead.
To make matters worse, the Lilywhites are forced to be without the only natural attacking midfielder in their squad in James Maddison. The England international ruptured his ACL earlier this month in a pre-season friendly, ruling him out for most parts of the season.
There is no surprise that Tottenham are willing to splash the cash on Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers. The England international made serious strides in the Premier League last season, and the Lilywhites took notice of that. Selling Rogers would also help Villa in their PSR situation. However, the Villans have no intentions of selling the 23-year-old in the coming days as they consider him a key part of Unai Emery’s team.
Now, Ian Darke has urged Spurs to do everything they can to bring the prolific attacker to N17. Speaking to Tottenham News, Darke said,
“Yes, I would say it is [the type of signing they need to make], PFA Young Player of the Year, terrific young player who has earned his stripes, he’s been out on loan in other divisions, got into the England squad.”
The iconic commentator added,
“I think Tottenham are showing plenty of ambition, but it would take a mighty big bid, more than £80million, are Tottenham prepared to go that deep? The other question is in the state of the current market, is he worth that kind of money? Yes, he probably is for Spurs because they need a number 10.”
Ian Darke believes Tottenham need to bring in Morgan Rogers as he has enough experience to thrive at N17. The iconic commentator admits that the Lilywhites have shown ambition in the summer, but questions the club’s ability to pay the hefty price for Rogers’ signature. Darke also believes that the England international is worth the £80m asking price that Aston Villa has set for him.
Signing a player of Morgan Rogers’ calibre will be the coup of the summer if Tottenham find a way to pull this deal off. The England international just won the ‘PFA Young Player of the Year’ award for his outstanding performances last season. So there is no doubt about the fact that the 23-year-old has immense talent that he can fulfil while donning the Lilywhite jersey.
