Matthew Mott, who is currently Greg Shipperd's assistant coach for the men's squad in the BBL, will take over as head coach of the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL, succeeding Charlotte Edwards.
Mott will be making his comeback to the women's game with this move, three and a half years after he resigned as Australia's coach after a lengthy and fruitful career.
In order to assume her new role as head coach of the England women's team, Edwards left her position at the Sixers last month. The Sixers said on Friday that Mott had agreed to a two-year deal to replace her. General manager Rachael Haynes praised Mott's ability to create a winning culture and apply a top-tier strategy to the setup.
Mott is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Delhi Capitals (DC), an IPL team. This summer, he will coach the Seattle Orcas, who are partially owned by DC co-owners GMR Group, in Major League Cricket. He has been more active in the franchise circuit since he was fired as head coach of the England men's white-ball team after the T20 World Cup last year.
During Mott's tenure as head coach, Australia's women saw considerable success, winning the 50-over World Cup in 2022 and the T20 World Cup in 2019. After leading England to the 2022 T20 World Cup final, he was fired after 18 months of underwhelming play.
The Sixers placed sixth in the previous season and haven't won the WBBL since the 2017–18 campaign. At the WBBL draft next month, the Sixers will have the first pick.
