NBA and college basketball fans were hit with heartbreaking news on Thursday as the son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, Alijah Arenas, was hospitalized and placed into an induced coma after his involvement in a serious car crash.
A five-star recruit in the 2026 class, the 18-year-old committed to the USC Trojans in January over offers from UCLA, Arizona, Alabama, Washington and several other big-time college basketball programs.
According to On3, Arenas is the No. 12-ranked player nationally, fourth among shooting guards and third among California players.
Several current and former NBA players shared their thoughts and prayers to Arenas, his father, family and friends after news of the incident.

Jamal Crawford, who played in the NBA for 20 seasons, shared a message for Arenas on social media.
"Prayers up for Alijah! ," said Crawford.
Former 76ers draft pick Evan Turner, who played for 10 seasons in the NBA, also offered prayers to the 18-year-old USC commit.
"Prayers up for Alijah Arenas ," shared Turner.
Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith also shared his thoughts.
"Yooo MAJOR PRAYERS GOES OUT TO Alijah Arenas N GILBERT Arenas FAMILY ... Hoping for the best ," read an Instagram story from former Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics legend Kevin Garnett.
"Prayers up for the son of Gilbert Arenas and 5 Star USC Basketball commit Alijah Arenas. He is in an induced coma after being injured in a car crash. ," said former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Last season, Arenas averaged 29.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game for Chatsworth (CA). A 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard, he's been described as a "versatile scoring threat" with a "massive 7-foot wingspan and 8-foot-9 standing reach" by 247Sports scout Adam Finkelstein.
When discussing his decision to commit to the Trojans, Arenas said during his shared podcast with his father that the program felt best for him.
"(USC) felt like the best fit," Arenas said. "For everybody that supported me on this journey, just helped me see my path. Then, going on campus and seeing how USC was made me special. I talked to the coach, and seeing what I could possibly be, it was amazing for me. I think I could really go and play for USC."
Details of the crash and the full extent of Arenas' health have not yet been released to the public.
