Nebraska Athletics is having a bit more of a quiet week. Things are starting to get wrapped up in terms of spring sports, with postseason competitions beginning.

On the Nebraska football front, more preseason hype abounds, as the program continues to get national respect from several analysts. We have all fallen for the hype before, but it’s good to see Nebraska is continuing to gain respect nationally.

With that in mind, we catch you up on the latest happenings in Nebraska sports, as the spring seasons come to a close.

Nebraska  football continuing to get national respect

Nebraska football ranked highly in a post-spring\portable power rankings poll on Wednesday. On3’s Jesse Simonton took stock of the Big Ten, and placed Nebraska fifth overall.

This is certainly a respectable ranking, given all the talent Nebraska has brought in, on both sides of the football. The four teams ahead of Nebraska where Penn State, Michigan, Oregon, and Ohio State at the top.

The Huskers have been ranking highly in post-spring polls, and this is another case where the hype continues to build. This is all hype, and Nebraska football will have to prove it on the field. Even still, it’s worth noting that they are getting the respect nationally.

Nebraska baseball struggles in Big 10 Tournament opener

Nebraska baseball got walloped on Tuesday night by Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament opener by a 15-to margin. The Huskers scored two runs on four hits, while Ohio State scored 15 runs on 15 hits.

Jackson Brockett struggled on the mound, giving up three runs on seven hits in three innings. Nebraska baseball had to use four pitchers in this game alone, as Nebraska struggled to get anything going.

Now, Nebraska baseball has to play a double elimination game against sixth-seeded Purdue on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Brett Sears will be pitching for Nebraska, coming fresh off Big Ten Pitcher of the Year award recognition.

Sears currently has a 2.05 ERA, good for best in the conference. He also has 87 strikeouts and 16 walks over 92 innings.

Nebraska track and field  start preliminary rounds

The Nebraska track and field team will take part in the NCAA West preliminary round, beginning on Wednesday. This is their first meet since May 10-12, when the men finished in first place in the Big 10 outdoor championships. The women finished in second place, putting together a solid showing for the University,

The track team will be busy this week, with several meets throughout the week.
