Was last season a breakthrough or a one-off for New Mexico?

It's not a program used to winning, but new head coach Jason Eck pulled off nine wins, had the Lobos in the mix for the Mountain West title, and they're built to run it back in a far lighter league with most of last year's power programs off to the Pac-12.

How tough is the New Mexico schedule? Here's our breakdown.

New Mexico 2026 Football Schedule: Key Games, Strengths, and Predictions

The Good

The new Mountain West is much, much more manageable and easier than the previous version.

With several top teams off to the Pac-12, there’s no Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, or Utah State to deal with like last year.

The road game at Oklahoma is rough, but Central Michigan, Mercyhurst, and at New Mexico State are all winnable non-conference games. Getting North Dakota State and UNLV in Albuquerque is a major plus.

The Bad

There’s a lot of time spent away from University Stadium over the second half of the season.

The Lobos have to deal with a rough run of four road games in six weeks, and that includes a long trip to Hawaii - but there’s a week off before dealing with the Rainbow Warriors.

Best-Case Scenario

New Mexico owns the home games, including the wins over NDSU and UNLV. The loss to Oklahoma isn’t that massive, and the time off to get ready is enough to get by Hawaii.

Favored in the road games against New Mexico State, San Jose State, Nevada, and Wyoming, there’s a misfire, but it’s a whopper of a 10-2 season.

Worst-Case Scenario

Central Michigan shows up large in the season opener, and in a quirky in-state rivalry thing, New Mexico State wins - the Lobos start 1-3.

They lose at Hawaii, drop one of the two road dates at San Jose State and Nevada, and they don’t get by both the Bison and Rebels at home. They have a losing season before hosting Air Force.

Games That Will Decide New Mexico’s 2026 Season

1. at Hawaii, Oct. 17

By far the toughest Mountain West road game, if the Lobos can get out of Honolulu with a win, it’s all there for the taking with the biggest remaining games at home.

2. North Dakota State, Oct. 24

It’s the lone home oasis in a run of three road games in four weeks. Lose, and the dates at San Jose State and Nevada are must wins.

3. UNLV, Nov. 7

It was the moment when New Mexico showed it was something special last year, beating the Rebels in Vegas. This should have a bearing on the Mountain West title in one way or another.
