The Texas Tech Red Raiders are coming off a successful 8-4 regular season mark in 2024. Coach Joey McGuire also went 6-3 in Big 12 play, just the fifth time in program history that Tech won at least six league games.
But improvement and change was still needed. Former offensive coordinator Zach Kittley was named the new head coach at Florida Atlantic, and ex-defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter was relieved of his duties after a subpar season on that side of the ball.
Mack Leftwich was brought in to replace Kittley, and on Thursday afternoon he was introduced to the media. He shared immediate plans for the summer and also long-term goals with the program.
He indicated he has no desire to move away from the current "Air Raid" scheme that has been a staple of the program for years.
“We’ll do a lot of stuff, what people would call choice routes, so giving the receivers two or three different options to try to get open,” Leftwich said. “... We want to be simple enough where we can get good at those things in the passing game.”
At Leftwich's last stop at Texas State, the offense averaged a conference-leading 474.3 yards per game.
For immediate goals, Leftwich said he just wants to "build relationships" with his new staff and players.
“I'm here to build relationships with those guys and help them in any way I can,” Leftwich said. “I think that's what these next couple weeks, as they're getting ready for the bowl game, are what's going to be really important for me with these current guys.”
