As Tuesday afternoon's 53-man roster deadline inches closer, NFL teams are furiously trimming rosters in order to get to that magic number.
The New York Jets are no exception. Sunday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter , the team released veteran linebacker Jamin Davis and waived an additional six players. Among them was former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez.
The decision to waive Martinez leaves the Jets with three quarterbacks on the roster: Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and former Mizzou signal caller Brady Cook.
Cook, 23, was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent in April and has looked impressive against NFL competition. He's appeared in all three preseason games, completing 25-of-38 passes (65.8 pct.) for 235 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He led all Jets quarterbacks with an 80.5 passer rating.
Prior to landing with the Jets, Cook led Mizzou to back-to-back 10-plus win seasons in 2023 and 2024. In 46 career games with the Tigers, he threw for 9,013 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Cook posted a 143.53 career pass efficiency rating and is the only Mizzou QB to start four bowl games.
The decision by the Jets to waive Martinez however doesn't guarantee a roster spot for Cook. Fields, who signed a two-year $40 million deal with the Jets in March, is the projected starter. 15-year NFL veteran Tyrod Taylor is his backup. Despite not seeing any action this preseason, Taylor is expected to be ready for Week 1.
As Cook awaits his fate, the Jets may elect to keep Fields and Taylor and release Cook, making him a likely practice squad candidate. The NFL's 53-man roster deadline is set for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
