Nick Saban Urges Major Shift to Solve College Football’s Issues

As the expanded College Football Playoff prepares to kick off on Friday, December 19, conversations about the future of the sport are intensifying. The rapid changes brought by name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and the NCAA Transfer Portal have sparked widespread concern that the college football ecosystem has become increasingly chaotic.

During a recent appearance on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” retired Alabama head coach Nick Saban shared his candid assessment of these challenges and proposed a clear path forward.

Saban endorsed the creation of a centralized authority figure to oversee the entire sport, similar to the role Roger Goodell plays in the NFL.

“I think that we need to have a commissioner who’s kind of over all the conferences, as well as a competition committee who sort of defines the rules of how we’re going to play the game. Because that’s what we don’t have right now,” Saban said, as shared by The Clemson Insider.

He pointed to the erosion of structure that once governed relationships between players, coaches, and institutions.

“We used to have contracts, for coaches and for players, that defined what’s your academic responsibilities, when can you transfer, what’s your obligation to the school,” he said. “We don’t have that now. And if you really don’t support that, you’re kind of supporting a little bit of anarchy, which is what we have right now, whether it’s coaches or players.”

Saban further explained that the excitement surrounding the new playoff format has temporarily masked deeper problems.

“So, I think having a commissioner, national commissioner, having a governing body, certainly would enhance [the game]. Because I do think that the College Football Playoff has kind of camouflaged some of these issues, because there’s so much interest in college football because of the playoff.”

Interestingly, Saban himself has been floated as an ideal candidate for such a position. On the December 11 episode of his “House Rhules” podcast, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule expressed strong support for the idea of Saban stepping into a commissioner role.

“I can tell you this, I know most coaches, I know me, if that was one the table, I’d certainly vote yes,” Rhule said. “Because he’s been in the trenches, he has experience, he has the vision. And you also have to have someone who has the guts and the toughness to make hard decisions, because you’re not going to make everyone happy. That’s why the NFL has Roger Goodell, he’s going to do things, even if people don’t like them, he’s going to do what’s right for the game. And they protect the league.”

With the playoff era ushering in higher stakes and greater national attention, Saban’s push for unified leadership highlights a growing sentiment among coaches that stronger governance is needed to preserve the integrity and long-term health of college football.
