Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back duo more explosive than Kyren Williams lighting up spring practices
GABY VELASQUEZ/ EL PASO TIMES / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Notre Dame running back room is stacked yet again in 2024. Audric Estime led the way last fall as the dominant physical force for the Fighting Irish, but the team also sprinkled in a handful of explosive young players too. This year, two of those young stars-in-the-making are set to break out together in a way Notre Dame Football hasn't seen in a very long time (if ever). Both Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price have been lighting it up this spring, looking more explosive than Kyren Williams ever was just a few short years ago for Notre Dame.

All spring long Jadarian Price and Jeremiyah Love have been making plays, talking through their expanded roles this season (as you can see in the post below from Angelo Di Carlo), and making sure they're ready to replace the Herculean physical presence and leadership of Audric Estime. It will be tough for either one to replace the feature back who just racked up 1500 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns, but both Love and Price bring much more speed and explosion to offset their potential lack of Estime-like power.

Jeremiyah Love has already received running back coach Deland McCullough's "Running Back Certificate" this spring. While not a physical certificate, it's a title bestowed upon players who are "certified" stars in every facet of playing the running back position. He's done so well in fact, that for the last 10 days he's actually been given permission to work with the wide receivers to improve on his receiving ability and overall understanding of the offense.

When asked about his newfound receiving role and versatility in an interview SI last week Love said, "I would say I'm very good out in space, so putting me in the slot, or putting me at receiver and trying to get me the ball in space fits my play style. I like that they're doing that, but I also want to play running back at the same time."

Love's versatility should come in handy with new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock's system that will spread things out quite a bit more than we're used to seeing at Notre Dame. There's a great chance both Love and Price actually get on the field at the same time this fall, with Love motioning out into the slot or tacking a quick toss into space where his speed can break off a big play.

Last fall, Price and Love forced over 30 missed tackles on very limited touches in the run game, and averaged over 15 yards after the catch on receptions. If Notre Dame commits to utilizing the increased spacing on their offensive front (with more three wide receiver sets pulling defenders out wide) the explosiveness and elusiveness of Love and Price should create a running back tandem that we may have never seen play together in the Blue and Gold.

If you want a preview of what's to come this fall from this explosive tandem you needn't look any further than the Sun Bowl at the end of last season. Late in the game, Jeremiyah Love turned what should have been a negative play on a short reception in the flat into three missed tackles and a touchdown. And as the post below aptly states, Love is going to be problem for opposing defenses this year.

And the long play that inevitably set up that impressive receiving touchdown? A 54-yard run from Jadarian Price that should have been stuffed at the line (as you can see in the video post below).

It doesn't take much space at all for both Love and Price to create huge game-changing plays. And word out of spring practices is that they're both making it look far too easy so far. Expect to see Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price both be given heavy workloads this fall for the Fighting Irish ultimately easily eclipsing 1000 yards from scrimmage each thanks to their top tier elusiveness and explosive play.
