Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back Caleb Downs (2) leaves the field following the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas for the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against the Miami Hurricanes on Dec. 31, 2025. Ohio State lost 24-14.

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back Caleb Downs is considered the top safety and a top-10 prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft. The former five-star recruit had a successful three-year college football career, playing for Alabama in 2023 and Ohio State from 2024 to 2025. Downs totaled 257 tackles, 16 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, six interceptions, 12 pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. His many accolades include First-Team All-SEC, Second-Team All-American, and SEC Freshman of the Year in 2023, First-Team All-American and All-Big-Ten in 2024, and First-Team All-American, All-Big-10, Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year, and the Jim Thorpe Award Winner for best defensive back in 2025.

Downs attended the NFL Scouting Combine but did not participate in athletic testing or any on-field drills.

Ohio State Buckeyes’ elite safety was rumored to have medical concerns

Cory Kinnan of Daft on Draft reported on March 2 that Caleb Downs was flagged with a partially torn meniscus and a potentially degenerative ACL during medical evaluations at the NFL Combine. The following day, ESPN’s Pat McAfee reached out to multiple NFL teams regarding Downs’ knee and whether it would impact his draft stock. The teams indicated there were no significant health concerns and that it would not affect his draft stock. Kinnan has since deleted his post.

Caleb Downs took part in Ohio State’s Pro Day on March 25, performing defensive back positional drills, skipping athletic testing, and appearing healthy. When asked about the rumored issues with his knee, including a partially torn meniscus and a potentially degenerative ACL, he denied the concerns, referencing Pat McAfee’s report. Downs also stated that his medical evaluation did not indicate any such problems.

“They already answered it,” Downs said, via Jaron May of WLWT. “Pat McAfee put out a statement about it. That’s not what my medical says. That is what it is. I don’t really know who gave him that information, whoever that dude is, but it is what it is. So, I mean, just continue to do me. I can’t control what people say.”
