Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss found himself at the center of a growing legal and eligibility battle with the NCAA. According to recent court filings, the situation may already have cost him one of the sport’s biggest honors. The filing claims that the uncertainty surrounding Chambliss’ eligibility ultimately led to his missing out on the cover of EA Sports College Football 27.
Chambliss revealed that he had been among the final three candidates under consideration to appear on the game’s cover. According to statements included in the legal filing, he was potentially even the favored choice by EA Sports as recently as last week.
The ongoing legal uncertainty surrounding his playing status made the situation too risky. Ole Miss fought the NCAA in court for a decision granting him an additional year of eligibility. However, due to this, EA Sports College Football ultimately decided it could not move forward with featuring him on the cover.
“In addition to the NIL compensation which Trinidad would have received for being featured on the cover, Trinidad would have enjoyed heightened notoriety and prestige since the cover shot is considered an honor in college football and in the gaming community,” the filing stated.
The decision represents more than just a lost marketing opportunity. According to the filing, the cover appearance would have been compensated at NIL.
Chambliss’ situation stems from a legal dispute over his eligibility. Ole Miss wants Chambliss to continue playing college football. Earlier this year, a Mississippi state court judge granted the Ole Miss QB a preliminary injunction extending his eligibility by one year.
The decision temporarily allowed Chambliss to remain with the Ole Miss despite questions over his eligibility. However, the NCAA has since challenged that ruling. Last week, the organization filed an appeal with the Mississippi Supreme Court. They requested that the injunction be overturned and asked the court to expedite the case.
That appeal has created uncertainty over whether Chambliss will ultimately be able to take the field this fall. It is precisely that uncertainty that prompted EA Sports to step away from putting him on the cover of its next installment.
