Ollie Gordon Deserves to be RB2 to Open the Season
In life, some decisions are tough, and some are not.
As the Dolphins begin the process of trimming down their roster to 53 men and setting their official depth chart for Week 1 of the regular season, one decision stands out as particularly easy for them to make.
Ollie Gordon should be the backup running back behind De’Von Achane.
But are we sure that will be the case when Miami releases its official depth chart?
Honestly, I am not.
Now, of course, the injury status of Jaylen Wright here plays a significant factor. If his injury is severe and will keep him sidelined a month or so, then yes, obviously Ollie will be RB2 to open the season.
Yet, if Wright’s injury is minor, and he is back at practice this week or next, I don’t have complete confidence that Miami will do the right thing and have Ollie Gordon be the backup running back.
Before I get into why, let me make one thing clear.
It is not even up for debate that Ollie Gordon is the second-best running back on this roster.
Ollie isn’t injured.
Ollie performed well in both intersquad and joint practices
Ollie performed well in all three preseason games.
Jaylen Wright cannot lay claim to any of those three things above.
Gordon has earned the RB2 spot.
But this is the Dolphins, and they don’t always reward the players who earn things.
Remember what Raheem Mostert said just a few weeks back about the Dolphins organization.
Remember, this is the same Dolphins organization that, with both Ryan Tannehill and Tua Tagovailoa, hasn’t brought in “strong” backup quarterbacks to push the starters in fear of having a quarterback competition of any kind.
This is the same Dolphins organization that kept throwing Liam Eichenberg out on the field as a starter to justify trading up in Rd 2 to select him, when he clearly was an inferior player, and there were guys on the bench who maybe weren’t world beaters, but were slightly better than Liam.
The Dolphins have a history (and it has happened on the watch of Chris Grier for the most part) of playing favorites.
Miami gave up a 3rd round pick to select Jaylen Wright in Rd 4.
Miami selected Ollie Gordon in Rd 6.
Who do you think Chris Grier and the Dolphins want to see pan out more?
Obviously, the guy they invested the higher draft pick in.
So, would I be shocked if Jaylen Wright’s injury isn’t serious and he is good to go Week 1, if the Dolphins have him at RB2 to open the season? Even when, by every metric, Gordon has outperformed him this training camp?
No!
Because this is the Dolphins, and that’s what they do. And that is how you go 25 years without winning a playoff game.
Ollie Gordon DESERVES to be RB2 to enter the season, Week 1, regardless of Wright’s injury status.
I just hope the Dolphins do the right thing and make that official on the depth chart.
