Packers trade for three-time Super Bowl champion offensive lineman to gain depth ahead of the regular season

Last year, the Green Bay Packers acquired quarterback Malik Willis ahead of the roster cuts . Now, general manager Brian Gutekunst is repeating the model trying to add depth at a premium position before establishing the initial 53-man roster . The Packers have traded a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire tackle Darian Kinnard.

Curiously, Kennard has won the last three Super Bowls. A fifth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, who won two titles in Kansas City. Last year, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and won the championship as well. Despite being part of three championship teams, Kinnard has barely played in the NFL.

His first regular season snaps came last year, when he played 71 offensive plays for the Eagles, three at left guard and 68 at right tackle. He gave up three pressures on those plays.

Throughout his four preseasons in the league, two for the Chiefs and two for the Eagles, he played 285 snaps at right tackle and 187 at right guard. The positional versatility is something the Packers historically value. Kinnard is 6-5, 322 pounds.

Contract

Last offseason, Darian Kinnard signed a two-year deal with the Eagles. Therefore, the Packers are absorbing the final season of the contract. It's basically a veteran minimum, since the lineman is making $1.03 million in 2025. After this year, Kinnard will be a restricted free agent.

Offensive line depth

It's not a surprise that the Packers are acquiring an offensive lineman to add depth to the position. While there are seven roster locks to the 53-man group, the other two spots were wide open. The Packers are keeping Rasheed Walker, Aaron Banks, Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Jordan Morgan, and Anthony Belton.

Presumably, Donovan Jennings, Jacob Monk, Kadeem Telfort, and Lecitus Smith were battling for the final spots, but none of them secured a job throughout training camp and preseason. Even with Kinnard on the roster, there is still one available spot, since Green Bay is expected to keep at least nine linemen.
