On Sunday, Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Cantlay played the final round of the Tour Championship in the same group.

Before play began, Cantlay was considered Fleetwood’s main threat, with both players starting level at 16 under par.

The British golfer started stronger, appearing calm, while his opponent seemed unsettled. However, the American found his rhythm and re-entered contention.

The two players have very different personalities, which added an interesting dynamic to their pairing at East Lake. Rich Beem later spoke about what it was like inside the ropes during their final round together.

Cantlay has a reputation for being reserved, while Fleetwood is known for being one of the more approachable figures on the tour.

Beem was working as an on-course commentator for Sky Sports at East Lake when he was asked about the early atmosphere between the two players during the final round.

“It’s kind of like how I expected, not much chatter between them whatsoever,” Beem said. “Tommy once again, body language looks good, walking along with Finno, Finno jabbering away. Yeah, everything is status quo.”

Cantlay is not one for small talk during rounds and Fleetwood seemed locked in as he chased his first PGA Tour title.

No one should have been surprised that there was not much conversation between them.

When asked about the shot clock displayed next to his name during the BMW Championship TV broadcast, Cantlay shared his thoughts.

It was suggested to him that he may have felt picked out.

“I know, I talked to a lot of guys last week. The course was playing really tough, so almost every group was behind time par,” the American said.

One reporter then replied: “They chose you.”

“Yeah, obviously I’m not in control of the broadcast or what kind of stuff they put on there. But I’m not really worried about it. I’m trying to make the lowest score out there,” Cantlay answered.

The 33-year-old golfer is often criticised for his slow play and rarely seems bothered by it.
