When the latest College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday night, there was no change among the top three teams. In fact, since the initial release in Week 11, only one change has occurred: the now-No. 3 Texas Longhorns (10-1) have replaced the now-No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs (9-2).
The top three currently include the No. 1 ranked Oregon Ducks, No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes and No. 3 Texas.
The Longhorns have had a dominant season, reaching the No. 1 ranking for the first time since 2008. However, not everyone supports Texas this season, and the criticism largely stems from its schedule.
Texas is ranked No. 37 in strength of schedule, according to ESPN's Football Power Index. The Longhorns have defeated only one team with more than six wins: the Colorado State Rams (7-4). Additionally, the only team they faced with more than seven wins handed them their only loss, a 30-15 defeat at home against Georgia.
Paul Finebaum expressed on his show, the "Paul Finebaum Show," that he believes Texas may be vulnerable this season due to their schedule.
"Texas is vulnerable because of what it hasn't done," Finebaum said. "That's really, beat, what I'd call, a high-level team.
Texas fans may argue that the situation regarding its schedule is not their fault. The SEC is known for being one of the toughest conferences in college football, and the Longhorns faced the defending national champion, the Michigan Wolverines, in non-conference play. A schedule that includes Michigan, the Oklahoma Sooners, the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs is not typically considered weak.
However, Michigan, Oklahoma and Florida are struggling this season, each with a record of 6-5. The Longhorns will face another team with more than seven wins this weekend, which will help improve their schedule.
On Saturday, Texas will face the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies (8-3). The winner will advance to the SEC Championship Game against Georgia. This renewed rivalry will occur at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
