Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has officially taken charge as the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The ACC announced on Thursday that Naqvi will replace Shammi Silva, the chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket, in the top leadership role. The decision was finalized during a virtual session of the ACC executive committee.

Naqvi, who has been serving as PCB chairman since February 2024 on a three-year term, will assume his new position from April 3. The ACC emphasized that his appointment marks the beginning of a new era in Asian cricket.

Naqvi’s Vision for Asian Cricket

Expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm for his new role, Naqvi stated:

"I am deeply honored to assume the presidency of the Asian Cricket Council. Asia remains the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am committed to working with all member boards to accelerate the game’s growth and global influence."

He further emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing the sport:

"Together, we will unlock new opportunities, foster greater cooperation, and take Asian cricket to unprecedented heights. I also extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing ACC President for his leadership and contributions during his tenure."

Rotation-Based Presidency and Silva’s Farewell Message

The ACC presidency rotates among its member boards, ensuring diverse representation in leadership. Outgoing president Shammi Silva reflected on his tenure and extended best wishes to his successor:

"It has been a privilege to serve as President of the Asian Cricket Council. The unwavering commitment of our member boards has played a crucial role in elevating the ACC’s stature across the region. As I step down, I have full confidence that under Naqvi's capable leadership, the ACC will continue its remarkable journey and thrive."

Multiple Roles and Shared Responsibilities

In addition to his new role at the ACC, Naqvi continues to hold key leadership positions in Pakistan. He is currently the PCB chairman as well as the country’s Interior Minister.

Reports suggest that former Pakistan captain and legendary fast bowler Waqar Younis will assist Naqvi by overseeing cricketing affairs within Pakistan. While Naqvi will focus on administrative responsibilities, Younis is expected to handle matters related to international and domestic cricket, player selection, and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for Pakistani players.

With Naqvi at the helm, the ACC is set for a new phase of strategic development, aiming to strengthen Asian cricket’s influence on the global stage.
