It’s not every day you see a Big Ten football coach pop up at an SEC baseball tournament — but that’s exactly what happened Sunday.
Penn State head coach James Franklin made a surprise appearance at the SEC Baseball Tournament championship game in Hoover, Alabama, where he showed up to support longtime friend and Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin.
The Commodores were facing off against the Ole Miss Rebels in a high-stakes title matchup and ended up winning their fifth SEC Tournament crown, 3-2.
The two coaches developed a strong bond during their time together at Vanderbilt, when Franklin served as the Commodores’ football coach from 2011 to 2013.
Corbin has led Vandy’s baseball program since 2003 and is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in college baseball.

Their relationship extends beyond the sidelines.
Franklin has frequently credited Corbin’s leadership and culture-building with influencing his own coaching philosophy.
"I love it, but I also just wanna stay out of the way because I don't wanna be a distraction," Franklin said. "But it's awesome. What Tim has built here is special, and I'm happy to have a chance to be able to get a peek of it."
Sunday’s appearance was a public show of support that spoke volumes about their continued friendship more than a decade after Franklin left for Penn State.
Vanderbilt’s baseball program has thrived under Corbin, and Franklin’s presence during championship weekend added a bit of star power to the crowd.
While the visit was unexpected, it’s hardly out of character for Franklin, who has remained vocal about the mentors and relationships that have shaped his career.
And in the middle of a hectic college football offseason, it was a rare, human moment that reminded fans that loyalty between coaches often runs deeper than conference lines.
