CBS Sports has spared no expense for its broadcast of the PGA Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. And that includes a crane carrying a cameraman at 100 feet in the air.
“We have a 300-yard fly cam, we have two bunker cams. We have a sparrow cam which runs through hospitality, we have a crane,” CBS sports golf coordinating producer Sellers Shy told News9.
There are more than 200 cameras in total, but none compare to the one hanging high above the 18th hole.

“His name is Cup and he’s a hundred feet up in the air,” Shy said. “We found that having a crane at the 18th tells numerous stories. It is an incredible piece of equipment, but it is also covering a hole that could make or break whether a player wins or loses the Wanamaker Trophy.”
It takes nerves of steel to spend a day 100 feet in the air filming the world below, but the shots are incredible.
Even with the advent of drones, CBS Sports’ high-priced camera equipment provides better, more stable views of the action. And while it may not be deep sea crab fishing, it’s still very much a dangerous job.
