The Philadelphia Phillies are 7-3 in their last 10 games and are tied with the Chicago Cubs for the second-best record in the NL (only behind the Milwaukee Brewers). Furthermore, with roughly a month left in the season, Philadelphia is six games ahead of the New York Mets for the NL East crown.
On Monday, the Phillies lost to the Mets to begin their three-game series. A day after their loss, Philadelphia made an unexpected roster decision that has left many fans confused.
According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies released pitcher Joe Ross, who joined the team last December.
"The Phillies have released Joe Ross, sources told The Athletic, Gelb wrote on X. "Ross, who signed for $4 million, had a 5.12 ERA in 51 innings this season."

The Phillies' decision to release Ross comes after his poor performance against New York on Monday. In the loss, the 32-year-old allowed three runs, one walk, and hit a batter in just one inning.
Despite Ross having a rough season, culminating in a poor outing on Monday, many Phillies fans were bracing for the team to move on from Jordan Romano instead, making this move very unexpected. However, news surfaced following Philadelphia's decision to cut Ross that explains why they made this move.
On Tuesday, the Phillies announced that they have placed Romano on the 15-day injured list with right middle finger inflammation. Since the Canadian native was bound for an IL stint anyway, this would explain why Philadelphia opted to part ways with Ross instead.
"Right-handed pitcher Jordan Romano was placed on the 15-day injured list with right middle finger inflammation following last night’s game," the Phillies wrote on X.

Right-handed pitcher Daniel Robert was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley
Right-handed pitcher Lou Trivino had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley and will wear No. 57

Despite the Phillies' decision not to release Romano, it is still safe to assume that they are far from happy with his performance this season.
Like Ross, Romano also joined the Phillies last December, and he has also been a big disappointment. On the year, Romano has an 8.23 ERA in 42.2 innings pitched across 49 appearances.
The 32-year-old has not played well this season, but that has not stopped the Phillies from remaining competitive and looking like World Series contenders once again. They will have some obstacles to overcome the rest of the way, but things are looking good for Philadelphia at the moment. If they can end the season strong, they will have a lot of momentum heading into the playoffs, which could bode well for them.
