A day after attending the Pac-12 title game between Washington and Oregon at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas Raiders Interim Head Coach Antonio Pierce was back on the field Saturday for the Mountain West Championship game.
Still in his Raiders varsity jacket, Pierce was watching a team he knew quite well, Boise State, who defeated UNLV, 44-20.
Pierce's son, DeAndre Pierce, played four years at Boise State, where he was named an All-Mountain West honorable mention in just his sophomore season. He then played under his father for two seasons at Arizona State.
DeAndre Pierce, who was invited to Raiders rookie minicamp back in May, went on to become a defensive quality control coach at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly).
"I laugh about it -- ever since he was little, he's kind of, like, followed that path, right?" Antonio Pierce told Jay Tust of KTVB at the Mountain West title game. "And for him making his own name for himself -- had an opportunity with the Raiders last year; didn't quite work out. Now he's into coaching at Cal Poly, and I think he has a bright future.
"Obviously, he's a smart football player, smart coach. I don't know where he gets that from, but [laughter]. But no, no, listen man, he has a love and a passion for it, and I'm excited to see what happens."
DeAndre Pierce totaled 144 combined tackles, seven for losses, a sack, an interception and six passes defensed in his 35 games as a defensive back at Boise State. He won two conference championships during his years there.
His father still follows the Broncos.
"Obviously, whenever your son or a family member goes to a program and a college [and] is given that opportunity, you always follow," Antonio Pierce said. "And obviously, before Andy Avalos' situation. Good friends with Andy as well.
"So I was always supporting the blue."
The Silver and Black will return home to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to take on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, December 10, at 4:05 p.m. EST/1:05 p.m. PST.
