Pitt has secured one of its top targets in the class of 2025, bolstering what is now an elite defensive back haul for the Panthers’ coaching staff.

Mason Alexander — a 6-foot, 180-pound four-star cornerback from Hamilton Southeastern in Fishers, Ind. — committed to Pitt Wednesday morning over some serious contenders, picking the Panthers over offers from Auburn, Ball State, Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia State, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Toledo, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, Western Michigan and Wisconsin.

Alexander announced his commitment on Instagram, officially giving the Panthers yet another top defensive back in the class of 2025.

Alexander made official visits to Pitt and Purdue, and he’s coming off an official visit to Pitt over the weekend, spending a few days in Pittsburgh with the coaching staff and his future teammates. He was in town with another four-star cornerback Elijah Dotson, who has been committed to Pitt since May.

He received his first Power Four offer from Pitt last year, with Archie Collins extending an offer on April 1, 2023, and the culmination of the year-long relationship came to fruition over the weekend.

The Panthers are very much better off adding a commitment from Alexander.

Alexander is an explosive playmaker, able to play on both sides of the ball and special teams, but he’s a prototypical cornerback. He’s a smooth, fluid athlete who’s able to drop down and make tackles at the line of scrimmage and drop back and shadow opposing — top — wideouts.

Alexander racked up 39 tackles (19 solo), three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), eight pass breakups and a forced fumble as a junior at Hamilton Southeastern last season.

247Sports rates Alexander as the 298th-ranked recruit in the class (29th-ranked cornerback and fifth-ranked recruit from Indiana) while On3 rates him as the 279th-ranked recruit in the class (25th-ranked cornerback and fifth-ranked recruit from Indiana).

Rivals rates him as the 34th-ranked cornerback and fifth-ranked recruit from Indiana — holding a 5.8 Rivals Rating.

Alexander is an elite addition to the class of 2025, a cornerstone piece alongside Dotson in the secondary — without mentioning a diamond in the rough in Shawn Lee. And it appears that it’s coming down to Pitt and Purdue,

It’s interesting that Pitt and Purdue were once again in the mix for one of the top cornerbacks in the class, considering 2024 four-star defensive back Koy Beasley decided between Pitt and Purdue this time last year. The Boilermakers won that battle, but the Panthers won the battle this time around.

Pitt now holds 18 commitments in the class of 2025:

Three-star athlete Synkwan Smith (Roswell, Ga.), three-star Kha’leal Sterling (Miami, Fla.), three-star Torian Chester (Albany, Ga.), three-star Akram Elnagmi (England), three-star wide receiver DaMarion Fowlkes (Olney, Md.), three-star tight end Max Hunt (Tampa, Fla.), offensive lineman Shep Turk (Jefferson Hills, Pa.), three-star wide receiver Tony Kinsler (Port Orange, Fla.), three-star wide receiver Bryce Yates (Chesterfield, Va.), three-star running back Ja’Kyrian Turner (Bushnell, Fla.) and three-star quarterback Mason Heintschel (Oregon, Ohio) offensively.

Alexander, three-star linebacker Emmanuel Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va.), three-star cornerback Shawn Lee (Harrisburg, Pa.), three-star linebacker Justin Thompson (Olney, Md.), three-star defensive end Julian Anderson (Orlando, Fla.), four-star cornerback Elijah Dotson (Detroit, Mich.) and three-star defensive lineman Trevor Sommers (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) defensively.
