Predicting the Buffalo Bills' 17-man practice squad: More than one camp darling and 'Hard Knocks' standout show up on the PS

The Buffalo Bills have wrapped up their preseason after a 23- 21 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, general manager Brandon Beane and the front office have to cut their roster down from 90 to 53 players ahead of the deadline on Tuesday, August 26, at 4 pm ET. One way that teams navigate the roster is by using the PS to stash players. However, there are rules that teams must follow and certain eligibility requirements necessary for a player to be added.

To be added to the PS, a player is immediately eligible if they have no accrued seasons. All rookies immediately apply. Next, a player may be eligible if they were active on an NFL roster for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season. And finally, the NFL allows teams to carry up to six players, per team, with no accrued season limitations: vested veterans. Our prediction has the team adding 13 players with more than one fan favorite, and some long shots for some of these guys to return and not be claimed from another organization.

Another wrinkle in the rule books regards the International Pathway Program. If the team has an eligible player, it allows an additional PS spot. So, with Travis Clayton being on the team, Buffalo gets 17, not 16 designations.

Bills 2025 practice squad prediction

Note: Players with one asterisk (*) represent 2025 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) represent 2025 undrafted free agents.

  • QB Shane Buechele
  • RB Frank Gore Jr.
  • WR K.J. Hamler
  • WR Kristian Wilkerson
  • WR Stephen Gosnell**
  • WR Elijah Moore
  • TE Zach Davidson
  • TE Keleki Latu**
  • LB Jimmy Ciarlo
  • LB Keonta Jenkins**
  • LB Edefuan Ulofoshio
  • CB Daequan Hardy
  • S Tre Herndon
  • IPP: OT Travis Clayton

Another year where the team is going to be hoping that Gore clears waivers. He's been fun to watch -there's just not enough touches for him with the current structure of the roster. Ulofoshio and Jenkins are stashed for some linebacker depth, along with Ciarlo, who has flashed on special teams and could be a prime call-up candidate. Davidson and Gosnell are also beloved, and our prediction has the team seeing them clear waivers to return to Buffalo. And, of course, HBO's "Hard Knocks" standout K.J. Hamler comes back to Buffalo, but on the PS. With a few spots remaining, it'll be interesting to see if or how Buffalo elects to use those last few spots.
