The third day of action is incoming at the US Open with iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff all set to take Centre Stage and open their campaigns in New York as we head towards the second round.
Sinner of course is defending champion at the US Open on the men's side of the draw taking down Taylor Fritz last year and it will be interesting in particular to see how he does especially given his recent travails with his Cincinnati Open sudden retirement.
To start though is Iga Swiatek. A former US Open champion. Anna Kalinskaya was very much open in criticising the fact that Swiatek always gets scheduled early and this perhaps adds credence to this fact albeit perhaps too given that Coco Gauff is the other WTA star on offer today, it was always going to be the case.
She faces Emiliana Arango on Arthur Ashe to begin Tuesday off. She comes into this week having won Cincinnati defeating Jasmine Paolini in the final 7-5, 6-4 after also seeing off Kalinskaya as well as Elena Rybakina and Cleveland champion Sorana Cirstea. This after she lost to Clara Tauson in Canada.
So how to gauge Swiatek is an interesting one as she is a bit more of a dead cert nowadays than she was six months ago and it is very likely she will sail through this opening test without much of an issue but the later tests will gauge how she really stacks up to her competition.
Speaking of Gauff, she opens the Night Session. As expected being the main American in action on Tuesday albeit it can go one of two ways as Madison Keys found out. Gauff slumped to defeat to Emma Navarro last year and peaked at the French Open before having pretty up and down results since. She faces Ajla Tomljanovic, famous mostly for slaying Serena Williams in her final US Open stand. It'll be a long time until Gauff likely leaves the sport but she will have her sights set on another upset.
Especially with Gauff ditching her coaching setup to join forces with a biomechanics coach in Gavin MacMillan. She is looking to finally sort the serve which has blighted her and saw horrific double fault counts in Canada which presumably was the final straw. The first evidence is tonight.
Like alluded to with Sinner, it is a night of question marks with Sinner not playing the mixed doubles either as perhaps expected given that he looked unwell on the sidelines when he retired in Cincinnati. Darren Cahill moved to alleviate all fears of any issues saying he was fine. Perhaps we can just put it down to him being the first symptom of the 12-day Masters 1000 events which have proven to be a cruel mistress especially in the American summer with players passing out a plenty and many just speaking up with displeasure at it happening.
He faces Vit Kopriva though which in theory should be a simple game to get his eye back in. Sinner will look to be again the top dog albeit we don't see him shaving his head like his great rival Carlos Alcaraz anytime soon.
Then finally onto the final Arthur Ashe game as Alexander Zverev faces off against Alejandro Tabilo. Zverev has been showing green shoots ironically since he had a week or so with Toni Nadal and took time to figure out his game and breathe. At the start of the year, Zverev looked destined to become World No.1 but in the end a poor golden swing turned into a nightmare as he couldn't find the wins he needed and it seemed to affect the rest of his season.
After that early loss to Rinderknech at Wimbledon, he reached the semi-finals in Canada and Cincinnati losing to Khachanov and Alcaraz and he now takes that forward to face Tabilo in New York.
As ever Louis Armstrong is also full of attractions when it comes to top stars as Lorenzo Musetti will be on upset watch albeit as he faces big serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Ever since injuring himself at the French Open, Musetti has found it difficult and against GMP it could be one to watch on that end.
Amanda Anisimova is eighth seed at the US Open winning a WTA 1000 title and reaching a Grand Slam final this year but it is very much ups and downs. She lost to Elina Svitolina in the Last 16 in Canada post SW19 then Anna Kalinskaya second round in Cincinnati. Both quality operators but while she sits as a top ten seed, her status as a contender is very much a question.
Albeit she showed at Wimbledon that turning it on when it matters is her forte so in reality she'll be one to watch. She faces Kimberly Birrell second on Louis Armstrong. Naomi Osaka was picked as the champion by Kim Clijsters and she faces the latter's compatriot Greet Minnen. After reaching the Canadian Open final and working with Tomasz Wiktorowski, she seems to be finding her mojo and is a success story of the past month. She has won this title twice so is Clijsters right to back her. Proof will be in the pudding.
Then another home hero ends that off as Tommy Paul faces Elmer Moller aiming to blaze the trail set by Fritz, Tiafoe and Shelton as the four new Power Rangers of American Men's Tennis. All competing with each other at the Davis Cup, they are bringing it onto new heights and Paul has been a big proponent of that.
Other matches to watch include Katie Boulter facing Marta Kostyuk, Alexander Bublik takes on Marin Cilic. While Ashlyn Krueger will face Sofia Kenin. Alex de Minaur also continues the theme of that tie by facing his compatriot Christopher O'Connell. All of this is on Grandstand.
Danielle Collins, Maya Joint, Monterrey champion Diana Shnaider, Eva Lys and Gael Monfils in an entertaining tie with Roman Safiullin. A Tuesday that has it all from top to bottom.
